I was so impressed, and since the Zune HD can output HD (720p via NVIDIA's Tegra processor), I displayed the same video on my TV directly from the Zune HD using the dock again the quality was gorgeous. I synced the video to the Zune HD for quality testing. The average speed was between 13 to 19 minutes. Just pick a source file, a codec format and then encode. TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress (with Nvidia's CUDA) is fast and straightforward. I installed Spore (perfectly playable), Call of Duty 4 (I changed most of the settings), and Left4Dead (set everything on low) and it works. I wanted to make sure ION could handles some games.

The rest of the time is spent installing Windows 7 and configuring some applications. Attach it to a TV with an HDMI cable and power up. ION can even handle a few games without choking.Ĭonnect the wires (all three!) and close the case.

It excels at handling full 1080p video with 7.1 surround sound and transcodes video up to 10 times faster than an Atom CPU alone. Think of it as a supercharger for the PC's visual performance. NVIDIA's new ION graphics processor is powerful for integrated graphics. Heres a shopping list: case, motherboard, RAM, wireless remote, Windows OS and a hard drive. The entire building process took me less than 30 minutes. The computer is missing a Blu-ray drive, but comes with 320 GB HD and 2 GB of memory all wrapped up in a small, glossy black case.īut if you're a real DIYer, start with separate components, tailoring the PC however you want. If you don't want to build your own computer, start with either a bare-bones (preassembled) PC like the ASRock ION 330. With some new features such as an internal Blu-ray player and a noiseless heatsink (instead of a loud fan) to absorb and dissipate heat, it streams HD multimedia without flickering or stuttering and it cost less than $500 dollars (and could cost as little as $300). My new HTPC, built around Nvidia ION graphics, is outperforming my old PC and has been shrunk down to the size of a cigar box. Because it's on most of the time, it runs too hot, and the fans trying to cool it down are loud, which makes the whole thing sound like a jet engine. I just want to check that this will be pretty easy to set up and user-friendly once it is - the Mrs will be using it too, hence wanting XBMC and Harmony remote support so it is very easy and intuitive.A few years ago, I built an enormous home theater PC that cost about $1200. I figure the ASRock is a good starting point though as I should be able to play and rip discs, browse the web, watch tv rips and play music etc and then add a NAS at a later date and build up from there. I'm still slightly unsure if that would be the best way to go - build a decent HTPC for the lounge with lots of room for additional storage and then put a simpler device in the bedroom to stream over LAN - the non-BD ASRock, Revo, Popcorn Hour etc. I've built plenty of systems but never a HTPC though I have been tempted a few times. Does audio over HDMI definitley work with XBMC on Win7? The ASRock will be used in a bedroom setup, attached to a 40" LCD so no amp. I'd probably be using a Harmony One and I note the USB ports are all on the rear, I assume I need some sort of IR receiver which can be seen?ģ. Will this work with a Harmony remote? Again, this has been touched on but I don't think I saw a definitive answer or a clear explanation on how this works. My laptop's BD drive is locked and can have issues with Any DVD HD so this needs to work for me - surely someone has ripped a region A and B disk using the drive and can confirm this works?Ģ. Is there an RPC-1 firmware for the BD drive? Or does it function fine with AnyDVD HD for playback and ripping of various region Blurays? It was mentioned earlier in the thread to check some firmware forums but couldn't find anything. I have a few questions before biting the bullet:ġ. I plan on getting the BD version and most likely 4GB and Win7 running XBMC. Okay! Thanks everyone for the useful thread, just spent the last few days reading through it.
